Sister Elizabeth Annie Wilson 22/174 was one of the 26 New Zealand Nurses who survived the sinking of the Marquette on 23 October 1915. A German U-boat launched a torpedo at the transport ship which was carrying ammunition as well as staff from the New Zealand No 1 Stationary Hospital. At first the nurses on deck did not recognize the torpedo but when the ship began to creek and sway they knew what had happened. Sister Wilson lost her brooch and glasses in the water and was stationed in Tahiti for light duties from November of that year.

She went on to serve in Egypt and was awarded a British War Medal and a Victory Medal for her service.
