Born on 28th July 1888, Lieutenant Henry Herbert Ffitch (Serial Number 6/954) was the son of Henry and Florence Ffitch. He embarked for Egypt with the Canterbury Infantry Battalion in October 1914, where he was a Lieutenant in Company A in charge of the 3rd Platoon. Herbert, as he was known, kept a diary from 23 September 1914 up until 24 April 1915. This is a picture of his last diary entry written on 24 April 1915. Herbert died in action on 26 April 1915 at Gallipoli and is buried in the Lone Pine Cemetery in Turkey. Before going to war, Herbert worked for merchants, Messrs Neil & Co, Christchurch where he was employed for 8 years. He also played rugby for the Christchurch Old Boys Football Club, was Honorary Secretary of the St John Ambulance Association and also belonged to the Christ's College Rifles. 

His diary was returned to his family after his death, and given to his older brother, Reginald Ffitch (my grandfather), which in turn was passed down to Reginald's daughter and then granddaughter.
